Identification: 

-Simple leaf, 4-6 inches long, short, pointed apex
-In late summer through winter, large, prominent floral buds, pubescent
-Saucer-shaped flowers, purple to pink in late winter
-Smooth gray bark, generally multiple trunks

Note:   Interspecific hybrid of M. liliflora and M. denudata, both Asian species.  This deciduous magnolia is a popular small tree in the Southeast.  The large pink flowers appear in the late winter before the foliage.   Many named cultivars available.
